Briefing for European Ambassadors on Israel’s Response to Terrorism

The Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs hosted a dinner at the King David Hotel in Jerusalem attended by the Ambassadors of Italy, Switzerland, Norway, Greece, Poland, Belgium, and the European Union.

The purpose of the event was to introduce the new Jerusalem Center publication, “Lessons from Israel’s Response to Terrorism,” edited by Fiamma Nirenstein, former Vice President of the Committee on Foreign Affairs of the Italian Parliament’s Chamber of Deputies and a Fellow of the Jerusalem Center.

Jerusalem Center President Amb. Dore Gold stressed the commonality of the European countries and Israel in facing the threat of jihadist terror, which makes no distinction between countries. He added that effective solidarity and coordination among all states is an essential factor in the war of the Western countries against jihadist terror.

Nirenstein explained that the publication provides the European countries with the most recent and updated lessons of Israel’s experience in dealing with terror, and Israel is willingly offering this information in order to assist Europeans in meeting the challenges they presently face.

Other Jerusalem Center experts presented various aspects of coping with terror from the security, legal, social, and psychological perspectives.

The European ambassadors explained the respective challenges their countries face in the field of terror, and were highly appreciative of the initiative to provide them with the lessons learned by Israel. They stressed their ongoing cooperation with the Israeli authorities, as well as their appreciation of what they are learning from Israel, especially in the field of aviation and airport security.

Would somebody dare saying that Mecca is not connected to the Muslim religion? That Rome is not connected to Christianity? Nobody would dare, but UNESCO went down to the lowest point of its history by denying the Jerusalem connection to the Jewish people. It’s a ridiculous disgusting lie.

The UN resolution is shameful, simply put it erases three millennia of archaeological, historical, and religious documentation which is backed by history and archaeology in Jewish, Christian, and even Muslim sources.

Jerusalem is mentioned more than 800 times in the Bible as the capital of the Kingdom of Israel. It became the central symbol of the Jewish people despite hardships and decrees during the Jewish exile. Jews continued to live and worship in Jerusalem. Those who were exiled and longed to return proclaimed ‘Next Year in Jerusalem.’ The word ‘Zion’ is one of Jerusalem’s many names and is the root of “Zionism,” the national return of the Jewish people to their ancient homeland.

Following the 1948 War of Independence, the city was divided, and parts of it were occupied by Jordan. The Jordanians barred Jews from entering Jewish holy places. Dozens of synagogues were desecrated, burned, and blown up.

38,000 Jewish gravestones on the Mount of Olives were vandalized. The dividing line was filled with barriers, and Jordanian snipers fired at civilians.

But the belief that one day Jews would be able to return to unified Jerusalem had not disappeared. With the unification of the city, the level of security for everyone increased.

Until 1967, it was only a dream to see together Jews, Christians, Muslims in the malls, in the university, in the school, in the streets. And also in the Knesset.

People of integrity, truth, and goodwill must combat the vicious and mendacious Palestinian claims. The fight for the truth of Jerusalem is essential: to guarantee the future of the holy city, to protect its holy sites, and ensure freedom of worship for all faiths for Jews, Christians, and Muslims. Jerusalem’s connection to the Jewish people not only as the capital but as the collective heart and soul that unites Jews throughout the world must be protected today, tomorrow, and forever.

Asse con Israele, spiraglio per i colloqui di pace

(Gerusalemme) Sostegno incondizionato a Israele, promessa che l'Iran non avrà nessuna bomba atomica, apertura di un fronte anti-terrorista comune col mondo arabo che porti a un nuovo tipo di processo di pace coi palestinesi. È valsa la pena per Benjamin Netanyahu di resistere con determinazione a otto anni di punizione da parte della presidenza Obama senza fare passi indietro: Trump ha rovesciato la posizione americana con una visita in Medio Oriente. L'opinione pubblica internazionale, l'Onu, l'Ue, erano stati plasmati dagli stilemi obamiani, quelli di un mondo islamico in cui la Fratellanza Musulmana è un alleato, mentre l'Arabia Saudita, l'Egitto e i Paesi del Golfo venivano messi da parte; in cui l'Iran era l'alleato strategico dell'Occidente; e soprattutto Israele veniva trasformato in uno Stato paria.[...]

Alzando lo sguardo su per le grandi pietre mistiche del Muro del Pianto è possibile guardare l'orizzonte del futuro; mettendo un bigliettino con un desiderio in una delle fessure, si attiva la linea diretta col Padreterno. Così ieri il presidente Usa c'è andato, cambiando la storia mediorientale e forse quindi quella del mondo intero. Perché ogni tanto il gioco cambia di colpo, e il cambiamento è imperscrutabile: i vincitori vengono messi nell'angolo, i cattivi vengono chiamati col loro nome, le bugie vengono alla luce... non è detto che tutto questo accadrà fino in fondo, fino a una conclusione positiva, ma in questi giorni col viaggio di Trump in Medio Oriente si sta rovesciando la solita «narrazione», il senso comune che ha fatto sbagliare tutte le mosse a Obama: Israele come una fonte permanente di pericolo da contenere in Medio Oriente e nel mondo; il terrorismo come un fenomeno delimitato che non deve dettare mosse di eccessivo allarme; e invece Trump a Riad ha richiesto ai sunniti un esercito arabo unito e agguerrito che restituisca al mondo musulmano l'onore di essere una religione e non una immensa setta violenta, «buttando fuori» i terroristi.[...]

Ne è passato del tempo, forse secoli, da quando Trump, durante la campagna elettorale, disse che l'Islam era di per sé una religione portatrice di odio e quindi di terrorismo, tanto da dover vietare l'ingresso negli USA a chi venisse Paesi Islamici. Ieri, a Riyad , di fronte a un paludato consesso di una cinquantina di leader musulmani da tutti i Paesi Arabi (di fronte a teste coronate come quella di Abdullah di Giordania, presidenti forti come Al Sisi d'Egitto, deboli come Saad Hariri del Libano, e soprattutto di fronte alla cipigliosa benevolenza del vecchio re Salman) Trump ha appassionatamente dichiarato alleati di primaria importanza i musulmani in una guerra spietata e definitiva contro il terrorismo. Ha usato toni drastici e definitivi: buttateli fuori dalle comunità, dai luoghi di culto, dalla vostra Terra... I musulmani stessi sono le principali vittime, ha detto, di questi mostri "barbari" "criminali", perseguitati dal terrore estremista come i cristiani, i musulmani e, udite udite perché mai presidente ha osato denunciarlo davanti a una folla di leader islamici, ebrei.[...]

La sua chioma bionda brillava audacemente sotto il sole saudita anche in presenza dell'81enne re Salman. Ma è l'unico segno della superata esibizione di occidentalismo del presidente degli Stati Uniti. Adesso il mondo arabo è amico.[...]

(Gerusalemme) In Israele ci si preoccupa, qualcuno laggiù dalle parti di Raqqa forse a causa delle rivelazioni di Trump sta rischiando la vita o è già stato fatto fuori; forse mesi, anni di lavoro sono andati in fumo, forse il rapporto fra i servizi segreti israeliani e americani, essenziale per tutto il mondo, porterà i segni di una ferita. E questo avviene alla vigilia della visita di Trump in Medio Oriente che inizia il 22, la sua prima uscita, una visita caricata di aspettative sia dall'amministrazione americana sia da Israele.[...]

Le elezioni in Iran, che si terranno il 19 di questo mese, sono uno spettacolo per il pubblico internazionale, un dibattito sui candidati che a Firenze si risolverebbe con la poco aristocratica formula "accidenti al meglio". Sono, insomma, uno di quei fraintendimenti per cui il mondo intero, invece di starsi a chiedere chi è il più "moderato" dei candidati è autorizzato a dubitare della democrazia nella sua massima espressione, "una testa, un voto". In ogni caso chi vincerà non dovrà contentarsi del potere legato al suo ruolo, ma sarà anche decisivo circa l'identità (e forse lui stesso il successore) del prossimo supremo leader, Ali Khamenei, che ha 77 anni.[...]
