The Council of Europe debates what happened on the flotill

Yesterday, a sitting of the Political Commission of the Council of Europe was held in Paris. We discussed many topics, including the development of democracy, the situation in Kosovo and in the Caucasus, and many other complex issues. But what could not be missed was an urgent debate on the recent clash in the Mediterranean and the Chairman of the Commission, the Spanish Lluis Maria De Puig, introduced it with unequivocal tones of scandal and condemnation, without even giving Israel the benefit of the doubt. The Turkish delegate took his turn to address the floor by accusing Israel of being a criminal slaughterer, of committing a crime against innocent people he called "civilians" and "pacifists", two magic words today. The Palestinian observer waited after my speech to repeat the same concepts, stressing that the Palestinian Authority and Hamas were united in the international condemnation against Israel. I said things that you know, listing the truths we know from videos and testimonials. As soon as the minutes of this meeting are available, we will post the discussion on this website. The Turkish colleague was stunned and tried to interrupt me several times. I continued slowly without him letting upset me, and on the faces of the delegates coming from all the countries of Europe and beyond, I saw at least interest for something they have completely ignored. What they knew, and what the Palestinian observer reiterated, was simply that Israel attacked poor civilian pacifists who wanted to break the siege of a starving people. Nothing else.
