Tarek Heggy's hearing at the Chamber of Deputies
Egypt, Nirenstein: interesting reflections raised by Tarek Heggy's hearing at the Chamber of Deputies
Statement by Fiamma Nirenstein, Vice president of the Foreign Affairs Committee, Italian Chamber of Deputies
(ASCA) - Roma, 15 March -''In a meeting today chaired by me, the Foreign Affairs Committee has been able to enjoy a great update on the situation in Egypt and more in general on the state of the revolts of Muslim countries: in fact we had the chance to hear prof. Tarek Heggy, an Egyptian dissident intellectual, author of dozens of books, always at the forefront in recent years for a battle for freedom". This was declared in a statement by Fiamma Nirenstein (PDL), Vice-Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee.
''Heggy, a secular Muslim, who has always been an ally of the persecuted Coptic minority, has announced the formation of a party that will run in the upcoming elections, based on three pillars: rejection of ideology, respect for minorities and rights for women - Nirenstein continues -. A party 'for those who are not currently represented in Egypt', he told the MPs gathered to hear him".
"Heggy said to consider himself confident about the possibility 'that democracy take root in Egypt, that the fundamentalist Islam can be beaten and that the army will have the good sense to pave the way for a new form of parliamentary democracy. His determination and his optimism has opened a gash on the positive revolution in progress, and raised by parliamentarians a quantity of questions. I am particularly pleased to have hosted him with the Foreign Affairs Committee''.
