Speech at Parliament on Ahmadinejad's visit

Mr. President, Honorable Colleagues,

since our Country, our institutions, the Parliament consider peace and freedom our fundamental purposes, I have asked to speak - even though I am persuaded that the following issue is really present at your consciences - in order to arouse interest in our Parliament concerning Iranian President Ahmadinejad's visit scheduled allegedly from the forthcoming June 2, to take part in the FAO Conference.

He is not a guest as the others. His visit turns on the world spotlights not only on the field of international politics, but also on the one of moral and political responsibility for the sake of our children's future. The way in which not only our diplomacy and Government - and here I want to congratulate it for having rejected every request of direct meeting -, but also our politicians, our civil society, our media relate to this visit, will be of major significance. Iran is a different State for various reasons that pertain to the culture of hatred. The State of Iran finances, transforms, swears war, arms itself and others. Even if the business budget between Iran and Europe is considerable and attractive, moral considerations should overcome the economic ones. While dealing with Iran, we cannot disregard his imperialistic strategy toward the Muslim world and the West, more than once boasted and declared, minutely organized since 2005 with summits, treaties, funds to terrorist groups such Hamas (whose contribute was raised up to 150 million dollars); we cannon abstract from its obsessive promise to destroy Israel, from the Shoah denial aimed at propagandist and antisemitic purposes, from its aggressive and openly scornful attitude towards our culture. These attitudes are concrete and pursue a logic of conquest which up to now has, unfortunately, obtained remarkable achievements. The management of Shiite terrorist groups as Hezbollah, and also of Sunnite ones as Hamas, is handled by Iran. The new situation in Lebanon creates an ulterior breach of struggle with Israel. The 30,000 missilistic armaments regained by Hezbollah since the last war, are mostly furnished by Iran. Hamas also uses made-in-Iranmissiles, relies on leaders trained in Iran and it seems it is waiting for sophisticate bombs EFP. A large deployment of moderate Arab countries fears Iran much more than the West.

Last Monday, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) released a report denouncing Iran does not supply the required answers concerning the alleged construction of atomic devices. It has also remarked that two different types of test performed recently by Iran, could be related to a nuclear program. Of this program is well known that the construction ofnuclear power plants is advancing rapidly and that, from last February, notwithstanding three different resolutions by UN Security Council, 500 more power plants have been built. The goal of 6000 until the summer is therefore plausible. In front of the IAEA protests, the new President of Parliament Ali Larijani defined the report "woeful".

In fact, Honorable Colleagues, not only the atomic bomb by itself, nor the Shihab missiles that are able to reach European cities, concern us: it is rather the rhythm of this ongoing armament effort, on the way of an Islamic reconquista, characterized by an eschatological, messianic ideology, which paves the way for what Ahmadinejad sees as the "world salvation", without taking into consideration the “salvation” of the globe’s inhabitants, of the human rights culture and not even of the risks for its own citizens. President Ahmadinejad, according togreat Middle East historian Bernard Lewis, is persuaded thathis way, of domination and conversionof the entire world, will overcome everything. His letter to President Bush, calling him to convert to Islam, his tone, together threatening and paternalistic, his unbelievable declaration that in Iran there are not homosexuals, his uncontrollable hatred against Israel, the women's oppression, the death penalty the provokes more than 200 deaths per year in his Country... all these facts should remind us that if only Italy refers at him as even just a media star, he will manipulate his visit as an ulterior means in his accurate campaign of distortion, in which extremism is a natural element, was is a matter of fact and antisemitic hatred is daily bread. Things cannot go this way. And we are all at the forefront to prevent this. This means very important strategic and moral implications. Laudable is the initiative of Il Riformista daily to sign an appeal and hold a demonstration.

I call my Honorable Colleagues to seriously address this important question, placing it at the core of their reflections and work as representatives of the Italians, so that our Country will reaffirm its will of peace, rejecting the warmonger substance of the Iranian politics, also on the occasion of this visit.
