Professor Bernard Lewis has left us. He died in peace at the age of 102. His blessed memory will be with so many people and particularly with all of us that had the luck of being his friends for so many years, when he thought us not only how to understand the Middle East, but how to make out of this a way of life, a struggle for truth, an honest effort to keep reasoning even among the worst conflicts. Nobody was more respectful and balanced, and in the same time more critical of Islam than Bernard. He kept loving it even when defining its crisis. Israel was for him a polar star. He was a wonderful friend, faithful and loving. I already miss him so much and I feel very close to Buntzie, his life companion.
