Obama backs Egypt traitor
Il Giornale, 10 July, 2012
Once upon a time there was a Great Country that had influence, mediation skills, and generosity, even though motivated by general and particular interests. This country was therefore looked up to as an International reference partner, especially for the Middle East. The last Empire, for better or for worse, was considered by some a partial judge, nonetheless a judge to turn to for any disputes or needs. Needless to say this great Country was the United States. The Empire does not exist any longer. It has been dismantled by three and a half years of Barack Obama administration. The US do not have any friend left in the Middle East, not even ousted like Mubarak or Bel Alì. The irony of fate is that this has happened since Obama has implemented his policy of praise and tribute to Islam.
Today's news confirms insult and injury. The injury: Mohammed Morsi, Egypt's newly elected Islamist president, recalled the elected parliament with 75% Islamists, both Muslim Brothers and Salafists (please allow some bragging: we had predicted this, whereas many had depicted him as a moderate). Urged by the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces, the Supreme Constitutional Court had dissolved the Parliament due to unconstitutionality. It was a barely subtle political move, like Morsi's, who in turn claims its constitutionality. The Court immediately declared that its jurisdiction over constitutional matters is not subject to appeals. What ensued was a wave of statements, a civil war climate, clashes in front of the People's Assembly, and threats to prevent lawmakers from attending today's session. As usual, Egypt is sitting on the edge of a volcano.
Here comes the insult: Obama's administration is poking its nose by inviting Morsi to visit when attending the UN General Assembly in September, a token of profound legitimization. Ms Clinton meanwhile calls on all democratic options to his rescue, the ones that Morsi, although backed up by the people, will surely discard, as soon as he is able to fulfill the Islamist ideology by enforcing Shariah. This regime will not be favorable to the US; on the contrary it will be an enemy. Obama nonetheless sent Deputy Secretary of State William Burns to Cairo, and on Saturday Hillary Clinton will be in Egypt. What could Obama do in such situation? Common sense would at least demand him to buy some time.
During the course of the Arab revolutions Obama felt however the irresistible urge to charm and to find an appeasement with the Arab world, which pushed him to support the revolts with no objections, demands, guarantees, even when they set off to persecute women, Christians, homosexuals, political opponents, and Israel. He is now off to support a regime which will soon unveil an anti-Western attitude combined with Shariah laws, discarding the usual cautiousness of the Muslim Brotherhood (nobody saw it in Tahrir Square in January 2011, until it decided to seize power, it threw out bloggers, it came out in its real racism against women, and it cursed the US and Israel).
The US had a line of conduct for the Middle East that removed any influence. The old support granted to dictators in Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Libya, Jordan, Tunisia, Yemen, Palestinian Authority, the moderate party in Lebanon … has only been replaced by a senile nodding. As Guy Bechor put it, it is somehow reminiscent of Clement Attlee's sudden plunge, after receiving from Winston Churchill's hands the British Empire, to run through it. He barely needed five years to dispose of Pakistan, Burma, India, Sri Lanka, and Jordan … We are neither maintaining that colonialism was a good thing, nor that Arab dictators were good people. But, is not a new dictatorship approaching? If we look at the emerging regimes, holding up some due hopes for Libya, what is Obama doing?
He is feeding him who will bite his hand. He is no longer able to manage the scenarios in Iran, Syria, Palestine. Morsi was chosen exactly because he was the strictest, the most radical Islamic candidate: he had expelled all young leaders, he had strongly opposed a female or a Christian president, he had asked for an Iranian-like Islamic Council of wise to show the way to the Government. Morsi has apparently already accepted an invitation to Iran, he now also received an invitation by Obama, the American president specialized in opening the doors to America's foes. Which one will he like most?
