Now it’s clear to everybody: the Jihad will dominate the “new “ Egypt

Egypt already breathes the air of victory of the Muslim Brothers’ Islamists and of the Al Nour party, even more Islamic. They have obtained at least sixty per cent of the votes, maybe more. And in the second round of voting, their percentage is expected to have a bold increase. All this is very scary: a source of the Supreme Military Council said to the Al Hayat newspaper – and for sure without binding it to secrecy – that an Islamist landslide victory would make the “army’s guarantor role” difficult and that with more than two thirds of Islamists in Parliament the articles of the Constitution safeguarding the laity of the state would be abolished.

For the time being, the worn out lay forces don’t have more than twenty per cent of the votes; the young bloggers fighting on the social networks to react against the triumphant and threatening statement by Abdel Monem al Shahhat, a Salaphite leader, depicting the Nobel Prize writer Naguib Mahfuz as a youth corruptor and as a champion of brothels and drugs. Another leader Hazem Abu Ismail has issued a similar proclamation as to the future of Egypt, urging the abolition of any contact between men and women if not married, the elimination of alcohol, music and much more and triggering a lot of shocked twits on twitter. We will see if these are only mere threats or if the army will choose a head-on clash. In any case a great storm is brewing and the West will have to weather it: today the Middle East is a mysterious, burning object, completely different from what we have come to know.

Well, we have understood that wherever the eruption occurs, ultimately the lava is very similar to the jihad. It has taken a long time, but here we are. However, we haven’t yet understood that everything has changed in the Islamic sphere. First the collapse of the West’s friendliest tyrants, Ben Alì e Mubarak. During the Cold War, they were antagonized by the famous «Muqawama axis», the Resistance. This group led by Iran, sided by Sirya, by the Hezbollah who control Lebanon, by Hamas poised to a fierce clash against Israel, and ultimately by Libya, has finally rejoiced for its alleged hegemony over the revolutions. There is a lot of evidence of all this, it will suffice to read Ahmadinejad’s speeches, his sleazy support of the Arab people after slaughtering his own in the streets; or Assad’s, when he said that Syria would not experience an uprising because his interests were the same as his people’s, i.e. fighting against Israel and the West. We can’t ignore that Turkey – in the role of a noble uncle - has taken many steps toward the axis and then it has gone back. In the meantime, Iran has been building the bomb, certain of its impunity.

Then things have changed: the weak link is Syria, but also the Iaea’s truthful report on the Iranian nuclear development for war purposes has been a turning-point. The bloc has fallen to pieces. Assad has killed 4,800 people in 8 months; Ahmadinejad is sending military aid to Assad, a hardly honorable gesture, while at home his nuclear facilities are attacked in various ways; Hamas is changing master, because his Shiite masterminds are helping Assad against the Muslim Brothers to which Hamas belongs; the Hezbollah are losing Syria and are in trouble. Some days ago, a Sunni rally led by Said Hariri, former Prime Minister, took place in Lebanon. The “resistance bloc” is plate and weakened, and in general all the revolutionary countries that are showing us clearly the Islamic side are economically and politically fragile and play moderate to obtain from the West development aid.

What a great deal of policy-making we can do today to pave the way towards a better future if we speak up our determination towards human rides and respect for the West. It’s now or never.
