Il Giornale, February 20, 2016A Hitler-style threat: there is no better name for the speech given by the Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah from his bunker-hideout. On the screen, he said that, if he wants, he can launch missiles to the ammonia factory in Haifa, Israel’s second largest coastal city, causing an explosion that could kill up to 800 thousand people. The speech was given on the "Loyalty to martyrs and leaders" day. "It’s simple mathematics", Nasrallah added. "A few missiles on a few ammonium plants equals the same amount of death as an atomic bomb... You (Israeli) have the strongest air force, the missiles and other means, but we will do the same as you with only a few missiles aimed at a few ammonium plants".
But this presentation of the Hezbollah as David against Goliath doesn’t work. The total number of missiles they have, by now – the missiles are the Iranian-Syrian award for the loyalty in Assad’s war, where they gave an important contribution contributed in the making of 250 thousand dead – has been calculated to 150 thousand.
And indeed, Nasrallah has contradicts himself: "The leaders of Israel understand that the resistance (that’s how he calls it – journalist’s note) has the ability to cover the entirety of "occupied Palestine"(that’s what he calls Israel – journalist’s Note) with missiles". And then he takes another step back: "… We do not want war … but we must be prepared for war to guarantee deterrence". The true motive for Nasrallah’s speech, who is said to be seriously ill and under treatment of Russian specialists in Teheran, stems from the Hezbollah’s complex situation.
The four-year long choice to champion Assad as the greatest Iranian hegemonic tool, has improved its combat skills while leading the Qusayr, Qalamoun and Arsal operations. Hezbollah has so improved its image as Lebanon’s protector against the Sunni jihad threat. The experience in combat has attracted many Lebanese youths; Nasrallah influence has spread to the point of sending counselors of the pro-Iranian Houthis in Yemen. Hezbollah’s military structures and the number of missiles aimed at Israel have expanded enormously.
But the killed in action(allegedly 2000) are too many, and a widespread withdrawal is under way. Syria, moreover, for decades has dominated Lebanon with force, and therefore for many Lebanese its role of Assad's proxy is unwelcome among the large public opinion. The close ties with Iran have made Hezbollah the member of a purely Iranian-Shiite front: too much for a terrorist group that has always sought to play the card of unitarian anti-imperialist anti-Israel resistance as its ace, and has turned it into a source of hegemony in the Arab world. Nasrallah moreover has paralyzed Lebanon’s internal life, preventing the election of the President and using threat as a constant blackmail to his enemies in the internal front. And its finances could undergo a change of course if the Iranian leadership changes with the next elections.
Thus, in order to reinforce its image, Nasrallah uses whenever he can the same old anti-Israel hatred. In Haifa, the mayor has announced that he is however happy that such a worrying and important issue as ammonia facilities be talked about, even if it arrives from "a coward hiding in a bunker". The IDF Chief of Staff Gadi Eisenkot has stated calmly that" there is effective deterrence on our part… The border with Lebanon has been quiet since 2006, the year of the Lebanon war".
