Manifestazione a Ginevra di fronte all'ONU

Cari amici,

mercoledì scorso ho partecipato a Ginevra a una manifestazione in un luogo altamente simbolico: alle mie spalle il grande palazzo dell’Onu con le sue 192 bandiere, appena insozzato dall'indecenza del discorso del presidente iraniano Ahmadinejad. Davanti a me, invece, un pubblico che gridava il proprio sostegno alla vita e all’unica democrazia in Medio Oriente. La manifestazione è stata convocata da numerose organizzazioni internazionali che protestavano contro l’impostazione dei lavori della "Conferenza dell’Onu contro il razzismo e le discriminazioni", la ormai nota "Durban 2", che si è conclusa ieri, boicottata da 10 paesi (Italia, Polonia, Olanda, Germania, Repubblica Ceca, Canada, Stati Uniti, Israele, Australia, Nuova Zelanda). L'evento voleva anche ricordare il sessantesimo anniversario della Risoluzione 273 che ammetteva Israele all'Onu come uno Stato amante della pace (peace-loving state). Su quel palco rappresentavo l'Italia nella sua coraggiosa scelta che ha fatto da apripista a una maggiore consapevolezza dell'Unione Europeasulla farsa in nome dei diritti umani che si stava nuovamente per compiere sotto l'egida delle Nazioni Unite e, questa volta, nel cuore dell'Europa, a Ginevra.
I lavori della conferenza si sono aperti lunedì 20 aprile con l'incendiario intervento anti-israeliano del presidente iraniano Ahmandinejad. Sul palco della nostra manifestazione sono intervenute personalità memorabili nella lotta per l'affermazione dei diritti dell'uomo, come Natan Sharansky, ex dissidente sovietico e ministro israeliano e Irwin Cotler, già Ministro della Giustizia Canadese. tra il pubblico, tra i tanti gruppi, anche rifugiati sudanesi e dissidenti iraniani.
E' stata una grande emozione. Come ho detto dal palco, ho partecipato a quel momento con tristezza e orgoglio. Con tristezza per le popolazioni del Darfur, di Cuba, del Tibet, dell’Iran, vittime di razzismo e discriminazioni che non hanno un palco dal quale poter fare ascoltare la loro voce. Se qualcuno ha pensato che questo palco potesse essere l’Onu, dopo questa Conferenza ha dovuto ricredersi.
E con orgoglio perché l’Italia ha deciso, con grande lungimiranza, primo stato europeo a muoversi in tal senso, di non prendere parte alla farsa di Durban 2. E’ tempo per l’Europa di adottare una politica in grado di contrastare la deriva antisemita e anti-occidentale di molte organizzazioni internazionali che si dicono per i diritti umani, e dell’Onu nel suo complesso.
Quello che segue è il discorso che mi ero preparata e che ho seguito poco perché sono andata a braccio...

I come here with pride and sorrow.

With sorrow for the people of Darfur, Cuba, Tibet, Iran suffer of racism and discrimination and cannot have a stage where to speak from. If some thought, before this conference, that it could be the UN, well, the last illusion has gone.

But I also come with pride.

Italy, my own Nation, where I am a member of the Parliament has been the first European nation to realize, only after the US and Canada, how a democracy with moral clarity could not absolutely participate in this Durban 2, after having witnessed Durban 1.

We have tried strong, with the unanimous vote in our Parliament and with the declaration of Mr. Franco Frattini, our Minister of Foreign Affairs, to make the rest of Europe converge toward the abandonment of an anti-Semitic conference aimed at denying the legitimacy of the only democracy in the Middle East.

We thought that Europe could have fought altogether for a good document, but we didn’t succeed. Only Germany, Holland, Poland and the Czech Republic followed us at the latest stage. The rest gave a good image of democratic faith when they left in horror Ahmadinejad’ speech. I really hoped not to see them go back to their seats, but they could not accept that it was the all implant of the conference and not the Iranian president to start again one of the murderous campaign of the UN against Israel and the Jews.

I was in Durban in 2001. I saw in astonishment Jews chased by the NGOs, crowd of delegates on the path of a document of pure hate against Israel and the US, preached by dictators such Mugabe, Castro, Arafat. I still have the photocopy of the handwritten speech by Arafat, affirming that Israel is the creation of all the colonialist and imperialist powers, meant just to dominate and exploit the Palestinians, a racist country. The NGOS marched under the picture of Bin Laden, and in four days the Twin Towers attack took place. Terrible times, terrible campaign of hate.
But still that campaign aimed at destroying Israel and the Western values was not as terrible as the one of this conference. Here the will of destruction is backed by a fearless, cruel Jihadist propaganda and is armed today with thousands of missiles that can arrive to Tel Aviv and is accompanied by the construction of the Iranian nuclear power.

Israel, for those who know history, has tried since November 1947 UN resolution 181, to handle peace to its neighbors. They, on the contrary, have always tried to destroy it. Who has accepted peace, like Egypt and Jordan, has received peace for territories. And who has refused it, like Hamas and Hezbollah, has faced the strong self defense of the Jewish people, ruled by moral, clear limitations.

Israel is a solider, vibrant democracy aiming at peace. But the UN has reverted this simple concept of the image of Israel, sticking on the contrary to the one proposed by its enemies: a country unworthy of living.
And in this spirit, the UN has avoided since the ’50 to clearly condemn anti-Semitism. 30% of the UN resolutions condemn the Jewish state; an average of 6 on 10 resolutions of the Human rights committee deal with Israel, sticking to all the stereotypes of racism and wild selfish colonialism that delegimate its existence.
Israel is a source of inspiration for any democracy, with its freedom, solidarity and love for life.
Its known the slogan of Hamas “We are going to win, because they, the Jews, love life and we love death”.
But it is true the contrary: this is Israel’s point of strength and Israel will win, in the name of democracy and freedom.
