Two fresh defeats for our civilization and for the coalition fighting against ISIS defined today the news bulletinof a war that is soaking the world in blood. Alan Henning, the 47-year-old British taxi driver kidnapped as he was trying to enter Turkey from Syriaand held captive since December, has been beheaded. We saw it in a footage, which also sums up the other three previous heinous decapitations, showing Henning being held by his executioner, with the usual machete in his hands. The assassin, this time with a strong American accent, addressed the US President: “Obama, you have started your air bombardment of Syria which keeps on striking our people, so it is only right we continue to strike your people”. A declaration of pure hate, with no logical meaning, since poor Henning, a non-Muslim friend with Muslims, was in Syria with an Islamic aid group just trying to bring assistance to the population.

This is what Alan’s wife, Barbara, had repeated in her desperate plea some days ago, a speech practically given on her knees, full of suffering and respectful expressions for what she repeatedly addressed as “Islamic State”, while begging it to understand that Henning was not an enemy, but a man who thought to be “in the right place during the right time”. Henning, as his wife recalled, had wholeheartedly dedicated himself to saving Syrian children.

But such a grim chain cannot be broken up: the British taxi driver’s sentence was announced in the video showing David Haines slaughter. Now, in this footage, the forthcoming execution of another prisoner, the American Peter Kassig, has been announced. According to ISIS, the only possible justice comes from their loony and archaic idea of Islam that conquers through bloodshed and terror. Its men love to show their stateless approach to an all-encompassing Islam, father of the worldwide caliphate. In the last few days, they have started threaten the life ofanother prisoner too, the young British photojournalist, John Cantlie, whose father, Paul, issued an emotional plea appealing to a humanity that seems really difficult to count on.

In the meanwhile, on the ground, ISIS is besieging the fragile front of the Kurdish-majority city of Kobane, near the Turkish border, which the Kurds will not surrender because it is holding the tomb of Suleiman Shah, the grandfather of the founder of the Ottoman Empire. Yesterday, ISIS’ siege has been tightened, the battle with the Kurds has been extremely fierce, and Ankara is now ready to intervene, this time not from the air like the rest of the coalition, but with its “boots on the ground”.

And we are talking about Turkish boots here. Again, Henning’s murder is combined, following a nauseating routine, with aspeech by the condemned prisoner who, before being executed, blames his country for his forthcoming death because it is attacking the Islamic State.

The Foreign Office released a statement describing the event as a “further disgusting murder”. Perhaps, this revulsion will slowly manage to defeat fear worldwide. But, for the time being, what we see is that the bombings are not being successful in preventing the beheadings, nor in making the situation on the Turkish border less complicated.
