Direct yet pragmatic: This is how “The Donald” is changing the Middle East

Il Giornale, January 15, 2018If the world weren’t so distracted by the avalanche of trash news that inundates our newspapers with sex and unthinkable verbal outbursts, we would realize that the Middle East is taking new and different paths from the past. Yesterday, the hug - strong and prolonged - at the airport in Delhi between India’s PM Narendra Modi and his Israeli counterpart Benjamin Netanyahu could never have taken place without a change in the overall global landscape. India is a leader of the "non-aligned" camp; Israel is supposed to be traditionally hated. And without a change in the international arena as new alliances are drawn, probably the spectacular explosion on Saturday of the great tunnel dug by Hamas that brought terrorists from Gaza not only into Israel but also into Egypt, wouldn’t have taken place. Four tunnels have been blown up over the past two months: a considerable threat to Hamas, which, in this case, also seems to include Egypt’s approval given its implicit silence.
The backdrop, spectacular but very well thought out, and which represents a real strategic shift in international politics, was Trump's stance on the Iranian question on Friday: a few months ago he decided courageously not to certify the Iran nuclear deal, now he has upheld the decision, not re-imposing nuclear sanctions that would have implicitly initiate the cancellation of the 2015 deal. When the decision expires, Trump announced that he’ll only uphold the deal if the US and Europe join together to fix its significant flaws: within 120 days, asks the United States, the bad deal wanted by Obama must be reviewed together with its European partners.
Of course Europe doesn’t seem to favorably view this revision in partnership with the US and, in fact, has immediately confirm its opposition in canceling or even changing the deal, but nonetheless will soon have to consider changes, if it doesn’t want to risk the collapse of its relationship with the USA.
"Attention", stressed the American president, "it’s the last chance". Immediately Russia responded by stating that it considers Trump’s proposal as "extremely negative". And again yesterday Federica Mogherini praised with no embarrassment the agreement during a ceremony in Brussels: she said it’s working very well, and that Europe will keep it as it is. But we will see.
Becuase the revisions, and it would be difficult for anyone to deny it, appear necessary in light of experience and common sense: Iran, according to the points listed by Trump as fundamental, would have to include immediate access to all sites by international inspectors, which today is forbidden in military structures; and must cancel any “sunset clauses” (now only ten years) that prohibit Iran from enriching uranium; it should also prohibited developing the aggressive ballistic missiles program and organizing aggressions, parades, continuous wars of conquest, and terrorist attacks.
Trump's response to European pressure is particularly reasonable, against any press negative coverag, expecially during the days of the desperate protests of the Iranian people, in which they ask for bread while the ayatollahs spend $15 billion for Assad’s war, $150 million for militias in Iraq, $800 million for Hezbollah and $100 for Hamas. Iran's response to Trump has naturally been arrogant. Trump, according to president Rouhani, "has failed to undermine the accord ... which is a strategic victory for Iran". And the second part of the sentence is true: the accord is an achievement only for the corrupts and aggressive leadership of Iran, despite the pathetic attempts on behalf of the European Union to present it as a historical achievement.
It’s an abysmal package of compromises that hasn’t kept Iran from instigating numerous wars of aggression, pursuing ballistic expansion, or curtailing its role as an international financier of violence and terrorism. And not even the hope that the Iranian people could enjoy the benefits of the deal has worked, as we saw during the latest uprising. Europe’s insistence to uphold the Iranian nuclear deal is cynical and shortsighted, just like when it says that Jerusalem isn’t Israel’s capital.
