Arms for Syria. Suicidal idea of the West

Europe removes embargo agains t Islamic insurgents and Russia gives missiles and planes to Assad. It’s a Boomerang

When it comes to warfare there is one unbreakable law, gunfire calls forth more gunfire, when there is shooting there is the potential for more shooting, when many lie dead and wounded more bloodshed is demanded, arms are like magnets which attract new inventions of war and the players involved use the situation to carve out more land for themselves whilst claiming to be on the side of peace. Eventually this plastic reconstruction of Hell on Earth will lead to shock and destruction. Perhaps we are already getting close. Once this Syrian madness is added to our own it may well come about. An arms race is taking place, with our weapons in an area where the contenders can be guaranteed to use them with cruelty, in the grip of uncontrollable dynamics in which Al Qaeda organisations like Al Nusra, experts in grabbing hold of anything which can cut ,explode or be fired are acting as a counterbalance to Assad and a small group of trustworthy rebels.

Perhaps the feeble, fragmented European Union whose foreign ministers after 12 hours of discussions yesterday decided not to renew the arms embargo on insurgents is not aware of this. The General embargo comes to an end on 1st June. France and England are the countries who have made their intentions to supply arms clear. This is too little to work as a conclusive decision and too much to help towards finding a solution at the next Geneva conference.

The Italian Foreign Minister Emma Bonino has every reason to say “this is not Europe’s finest hour” It is difficult to understand how our weapons (which ones? How many?) can help to destroy Assad’s Régime without creating another which is equally as bloodthirsty. A great deal of courage was needed for the first massacres (the main blunderer here is Obama) weapons had to be delivered on time and into the right hands. This was before the Russians took sides with Assad promising a delivery of more lethal weapons, the famous S300 missiles. Assad claims to already be in possession of them, many others insist that this is not the case and others still point out that even if they were already in Damascus it would take months before they could be mastered. Perhaps Hezbollah the well trained group of Lebanese Shiite terrorists which has sent 7,000 military men trained to the highest level to Assad, could achieve this more quickly. The rebels hate them so much that Salem Idriss, a military leader has stated that “ he will pursue them to the depths of Hell” The Lebanese are horrified to have been drawn into this disaster, even Hamas clashes with this group.

However Nasrallah has Iran and Russia behind him and while his enemies falter he threatens everyone. He recently declared that Assad’s victory is the main premise for the survival of Hezbollah, a dramatic turn which proclaims the Iranian-Syrian hold on the Lebanon. The Sunnites are attacking them as far as Beirut and Assad is trying to compensate them. The S300s which the Russian Foreign Minister continues unashamedly to define as defence missiles could fall in part into the hands of Nasrallah.

Israel has of course already declared that if the S300s arrive from Russia it will know what action to take and we can assume that they will be destroyed. Assad’s reply was unwonted: “I will perhaps allow Palestinian resistance groups and Hezbollah to attack Israel from the Golan Heights as they have requested”. It is the first time that the Syrian régime has ventured this far. Golan is a platform of decisive strategic importance, an area which has now known peace for 40 years. The S300 missiles would obviously not sit well here. Israel can destroy the missiles but this could seriously annoy the Russians given that they attach such strategic importance to their creation.

In their opinion “they guarantee regional stability against the hot heads who want to intervene in Syria” This is an acrobatic statement considering that for years they tenaciously sustained that the American defence missiles deployed in Western Europe were putting stability at risk. Here they are guaranteeing.
