And here comes the Egyptian atom power

Maybe the damage to the Egyptian nuclear power plants in Naaba, alarmingly reported by Fayza Abouel Naga, the Egyptian Minister of Planning and Cooperation, is an innocent, perhaps useful initiative … But in the Middle East, it’s better to play it safe. Naga voiced his determination to complete the reactor that “was badly damaged by vandalism”: he expressed his firm intention on behalf of Prime Minister Kamal al Ganzouri who’s extremely determined to have his Egyptian nuclear power. “It’s our first reactor” says Naga “we wont’ be bullied by hooligans: they’re probably political opponents of the current Government.” That’s for the record. As to the historical context, the truth is that since Iran has eyed the atomic bomb, the whole Middle East is in fibrillation.

The desire to develop an atomic bomb has had an articulate number of fans: Saddam Hussein, Syria, Libya… Moreover, several other Countries worried for their role have taken some early efforts. In fact, it’s clear that the largest Shite power, Iran, is significantly fantasizing to dominate the great Sunni powers, such as Saudi Arabia or Egypt. And Turkey too is in the bunch and has no intention to be trampled on. When Iran has the bomb, each of these countries will already be well on its way to obtain its own. And some tentative steps are also being explored by Bahrein, the United Arab Emirates… In the current world  - where the new leaders are linked to the Muslim Brothers and blurt out statements only to say «oops!» (such as the inevitable advent of a global caliphate, the desirable practice of polygamy, the disgust for the jews, the contempt of Christians...) the atomic bomb doesn’t fit. It’s an ornament that is far too costly for us.
